Eastside Parking Garage, Pittsburgh, PA

Project data

Location: Pittsburgh, United States

For the construction of the Eastside Parking Garage, PJ Dick’s team found themselves enclosed by railroad tracks on the one side and power lines on the other, thus presenting them with the challenge of not being able to bring in a crane. Additional difficulty is added by the requirement of achieving differing slopes across almost the entire length of the project, with heights up to 23’ and angles up to 3 %, as well as inward slopes across the width, for drainage purposes. Consequently, every single pour is at a different height. The contractor’s choice for the construction of the slabs and ramps is SKYDECK, supported by PEP props and MULTIPROPs, and also MULTIFLEX. Slabs range in height from 9’ to 23’, totaling 225.000 ft² and are realized in 10 day pour cycles, including post-tensioning time. The team, first-time users of SKYDECK, is able to achieve 22.500 ft² with only 5 to 6 days needed for setting up the forms. SKYDECK’s drop head allows for early stripping of the aluminum panels, while leaving the PEP props and MULTIPROPs in place, thus eliminating the need for installation of additional reshores. The parking garage will feature 554 parking spaces (335,737 ft²) and act as a podium to later support three more buildings as well as a street on top.

Requirements

Customer's benefit

  • Sloped slabs easily achieved with MULTIPROP, SKYDECK and MULTIFLEX systems
  • Fast cycle times possible due to labor friendly systems
Jeremy Meadway
Project Manager

“The real benefit working with PERI was the excellent customer service and interaction with the team. Good logistics was important because we do not have the lay down space. So it also helped that pieces and parts of the system are a minimum.”

PERI solution

  • SKYDECK and MULTIFLEX slab formwork
