Engstlige Tunnel, Frutigen, Switzerland
Hydraulically Forming and Automatically Moving Double Tunnel in Weekly Cycles
This cut-and-cover tunnel stretches along a 2,600 m long excavation from Tellenfeld (Frutigen) to Wengy-Ey (Reichenbach) in the Bernese Oberland area of Switzerland.
The double tunnel box profile was concreted in 12.50 m casting lengths. PERI’s tunnel formwork solution allowed the external walls, centre wall and slab to be concreted in one pour. Due to the tight construction schedule, six tunnel formwork sets were used in 3 different sections at the same time.
Formwork concept: The three formwork units each consisted of two tunnel and two external formwork sets. The tunnel formwork was equipped with four electric drive units and integrated hydraulic actuators. The up to 8.00 m high element of the formwork traveler was shuttered and struck with four hydraulic cylinders. When moving forward, approx. 70% of the bulkhead formwork could remain attached to the tunnel formwork, which resulted in considerable savings in time.
The external formwork was moved in three sections by crane. This efficient solution made it possible to reduce the planned 5-day cycle to 4 days.

Christoph Schneeberger Project Manager “Thanks to the practical details, such as the hydraulic shuttering and striking operations or the self-moving traveler, we could immediately achieve the planned weekly cycle! The highly mechanized formwork traveler solution was easy to use and saved time and labour costs.”
