PERI UP birdcage for
innovative building structures


The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, near Chichester, accommodates a fascinating collection of over 40 historical buildings. They are examples of traditional wooden construction methods going back as far as the 13th century. The most diverse techniques were the force behind the idea to construct a technically complex building out of oak wood battens that will serve as a workshop and archive storage facility.

A load bearing, adaptable scaffolding was the final choice following the close cooperation between PERI, the Green Oak Carpentry Company highly experienced in wooden construction, the Happold engineering office and the architects of Edward Cullinan. The scaffolding comprised of the PERI UP Rosett modular system, PERI MULTIPROP aluminium slab props and PERI GT 24 formwork girders; all together an economical solution that allowed the carpenters – rather unfamiliar with scaffolding – to erect and alter the scaffolding themselves beside their usual work of erecting the wooden shell.

  • The 50 m long, 24 m wide and 5.5 m high birdcage, assembled as a uniform network, formed the wooden shell construction. The scaffolding served as both working platform and falsework for the GT 24 formwork girders. There were hinged connections between the battens at more than a thousand nodal points. The PERI MULTIPROP aluminium props installed on the vertical legs of the scaffolding transferred the load of the decking.
    The scaffolding was altered and the props were lowered according to the shape of the building. The PERI UP scaffolding with its closed decks provided safe access for the carpenters to the MULTIPROP props for easy handling and adjusting. The integrated measuring tape allowed easy checks during the complete lowering process.
