Toulnustouc Hydro Electric Power Project, Northern Quebec

Versatile Products and Precision of PERI Prove Successful on new Quebec Hydro Project

Hydro Quebec, one of Canada''s leading power supply companies, continues with its aggressive program to meet the increasing demand to provide more clean power to its many customers throughout North America.
PERI has been chosen by AECON Civil (Montreal) as the formwork and access scaffold provider for the Toulnustouc Hydro Electric Power Project.
After struggling through a long and difficult power “black out” in 2003, Hydro Quebec increased its commitment to supply a huge grid including major cities in both Canada and the US.

Due to the confined space inside the tunnel at the roof area, crane access was not available to maneuver the forms. As part of the complete project services, PERI''s engineering department developed a scheme for man handling the large elements into position without the use of any cranes.

PERI Systems In Use
  • GRV Circular Wall Formwork
  • RUNDFLEX Circular Wall Formwork
  • PERI’s “Ready-for-use“ Service
Assembly Team: PERI Germany and PERI Toronto

PERI GRV system, utilized for the tunnel roof. The formwork employed had to be versatile enough to meet the strict tolerances specified by Hydro Quebec (1/8”, 3 mm) while being able to withstand enormous concrete loads from slabs up to 10’(3.05 m) deep.

PERI pre-built these complex elements in the controlled environment of the pre-assembly facility. This enabled not only time and labour savings in assembly and erection requirements at site but also assurance of a high precision finished product.

The PERI team of assembly experts prearranged the entire roof form in the assembly hall to assure proper fit for all the elements.

The form for the front section of the tunnel was also pre-assembled at PERI’s shop.

The form was engineered to be able to be transported to site in complete elements for faster erection on the space restricted site.

Increasingly, contractors are demanding pre-assembled and transportable formwork elements such as slab tables, special column formwork, RUNDFLEX elements or customized formwork.

At numerous logistics centers, PERI provides this service in state-of-the-art assembly halls. Here, well-trained and highly qualified personnel work with optimally-designed machines and equipment which ensures cost-effective solutions even for the most unusual architectural requests.
