PERI UP protective roof solution: Uninterrrupted platform use during roof renovation

The almost 50-year old steel construction of the vaulted roof over the Kiel main railway station is undergoing a complete renovation with some elements being completely replaced. This has resulted in the main terminal platform (approximately 2,000 m²) being temporarily covered with a protective roof. The design of the scaffolding system allowed uninterrupted movement of passengers as well as the erection and operation of retail outlets and kiosks throughout the complete renovation phase.

  • Custom solution
As a less expensive alternative to the originally envisioned steel construction, the formwork and scaffolding manufacturer PERI, proposed a protective roof construction based on the PERI UP modular scaffolding with PERI LGS girders (LGS: Lattice Girder System). This allowed an unsupported construction spanning the complete 18 metre width platform area using PERI LGS girders supported on PERI UP Rosett shoring units.

PERI HDT 300 girders, part of the PERI HD 200 heavy duty system program, were fitted to ensure an even load distribution in the shoring. During construction sufficient gradient was taken into consideration permitting the systematic run off of any rain water. The protective roofing panels themselves are comprised of steel decking panels as well as 2 layers of PERI Beto plywood sheeting. On top of this, a water-resistant layer of bitumen was added.

A mock-up of equivalent construction size was subjected to a number of special tests to ensure that German Railway requirements regarding the safety against any falling parts during assembly were fully met. Thus, passengers and daily business activities were properly protected against the weather and renovation work during the whole project.
    Summary
Apart from the utilization of 100% rentable standard materials, PERI provided a complete package - from the special design conception to assembly using a highly experienced scaffolding team.

Assembly was carried out in day and night shifts in order not to disturb normal station activities: preparatory and pre-assembly work during the day and work which restricted passenger movement at night.

Thanks to the detailed work schedule, assembly time for the protective roof was reduced by two weeks compared to the original planning – much to the satisfaction of the project contractors. According to the site manager, Michael Fohs (Schwalbe & Preetz Construction): “Assembly work of the PERI solution took place during normal rail operations with only minor disruptions and the construction fulfilled all the requirements of the client. It seemed to be very delicate due to the lightweight parts, which were put together very quickly, but nevertheless has an extremely high load-bearing capacity. Working with the PERI specialists was very productive and we had absolutely no problems whatsoever – during planning right up to the final assembly.”
