Mt Independence Visitors Center
Concrete Structure in the Shape of a Battleship with PERI VARIO Wall Form System and PERI GRV
On the eastern shore of Lake Champlain, in the state of Vermont, an unusual and innovative visitors center for a revolutionary war historic site is being constructed.
The concrete structure is designed in the shape of a revolutionary war battle-ship which frequently traversed the lake and defended the Americans during that period of time.
PERI''s reputation for effectively handling complicated and unusual concrete structures was, in part, the reason for their being chosen as the formwork supplier by J & L Foundations of Fairfax, Vermont.
The design of the structure, roughly 130'' x 52'' x 20'' (39.1 x 15.8 x 6.1 m) high, required creating the effect of a ship that had been run aground resulting in a list of
5 degrees to one side. Although this provision added to the complexity of the formwork design, complicated formwork is familiar territory for the PERI engineering team.
A total of 4,700 square feet of formwork, the exterior form surfaces of which received a rough wood plank form liner, was utilized on the project.

To produce the unusual geometry of the structure, PERI provided three different types of formwork:
FORM SET "A" PERI VARIO - used for straight, plumb wall & straight, tilted wall sections
FORM SET "B" PERI GRV - used for curved, plumb wall sections
FORM SET "C" PERI GRV with wood wedges - used for curved, tilted wall sections |
