PERI scaffolding solution
secures the steel structure assembly sequence

Since the beginning of the nineties the annual number of air passengers has almost doubled to around 8 million in the capital of Baden-Wuerttemberg. These circumstances are provided for with the construction of the new Terminal 3.

The design of the new construction is based on the much-prized Terminal 1. The steel tree strut construction that carries the enormous monopitch roof has now become the trademark of the Swabian airport.

The Weissenhorn scaffolding manufacturer PERI submitted suggestions to the steelwork contractor, Max Boegl of Neumarkt, for handling the scaffolding work for the steelwork. This provided that PERI was not only restricted to delivering the materials. There was rather a complete concept for the procedures submitted which helped to determine the construction sequence.
The task of the steelworkers was to fit together a complicated space structure with the geometrically clearly divided frames of the monopitch roof. The adjusting and measuring accuracy that the scaffolding solution was to provide was therefore of the highest priority. For this reason the PERI concept also included the assembly sequences of the welding specialists.

PERI Systems In Use
  • MULTIPROP Slab prop
  • PERI UP Rosett
  • Altogether there were 18 of the up to 15 m high "steel trees" with diameters of up to 26 m to be "planted".
    A method of procedure was worked out, in connection with the construction site, that was aimed at de-concentrating the steel work in time and space.
    The success was based on three complementary strategies:
    1. the prefabrication of large „tree sections“ (¼-trees) on the site in so-called welding scaffolds;
    2. the welding of the ¼-trees into complete tree structures in the final position in erection scaffolds;
    3. and spacious mobile erection scaffolding units.
    The exact adjustment of the steel components before welding together was made by means of tripod props. These were formed from PERI MULTIPROP Aluminium props, for which PERI constructed a special holding head. The continuous thread of the MULTIPROP props allowed continuous adjustment of the steel components to the millimetre.
    The PERI UP Rosett scaffolding alternative that was used provides flexible working levels at any position and height in the scaffolding construction, which gave the welders the ideal working conditions.
    The PERI work consisted of the project analysis, the task definition, the planning, static calculations, the construction and the manufacture of special parts. Non-specific scaffolding components were also integrated, the logistics organized and the erection of the necessary supporting and working scaffolds carried out with qualified German scaffolders.
    The steel construction site therefore has a tailor-made, „carefree package“ available that in the view of the responsible Project Manager, Armin Edbauer, takes a significant share in being able to finish the project on time.
