Steel Faced Self-Climbing Formwork
and Labor Saving Shoring Achieve 3 Day Cycle

At 46 stories and 456 ft (139 m) tall, the distinctive blue glass Grand & Kingsbury residential complex stands out in the River North area of Chicago because of the relative lack of skyscrapers nearby. The 10,000 ft² (930 m²) floor plan of the tower is poured on a three day cycle with SKYDECK, the modular aluminum panel slab formwork.

UNIPORTAL tables were used on the slab edges and ranged in size from 20 ft x 13 ft (6.00 m x 3.90 m) to 11 ft x 13 ft (3.30 x 3.90 m). Floor to floor heights of the tower are typically 9'-½" (2.76 m) and the slab thickness is 8.5” (22 cm). The residential tower is attached to a 5 level 25,000 ft² (2,323 m²) parking garage that has 6" (15 cm) slabs.

Four separate hydraulically self-climbing ACS units equipped with steel faced formwork gave architectural concrete results and allowed craneless climbing of the external formwork. This freed up crane time for numerous other site activities. Similar to the residential towers, the parking levels were all formed with SKYDECK. However, UZ Beam waler formwork was used to successfully form the 20" (50 cm) wide by 30" (76 cm) deep beams while maximizing prop spacing. The building structure is to be completed late January 2007.

    Superintendent:

“The steel faced ACS formwork is giving us the architectural finish we need, and helping us to maintain a 3-day floor cycle. We have just 8 carpenters putting up 10,000 ft² (929 m²) of shoring in just under 10 hours. We could not achieve his without PERI systems.”
